How do I fully describe myself? Other than a fast ageing writer! So much of of what I am is what others find in me. So, I’ll stick to the simple basics. Leaving school without any great academic success, I entered the world of advertising and marketing, originally on the client side (Cadbury's), switching to London and Midland agencies (even part owning one) before restarting my career at 50. Primarily as a freelance copywriter but adding a litlle photography and videography within a remit for providing semantic internet content and website design. That saw me through to my early seventies, when I decided there must be plenty of younger folk around to fill my shoes. So, I slowly faded into retirement. Only to retain that constant urge to write. This time fiction.
I'd penned a few odd pieces over the years, but never taken story writing particularly seriously; more just to amuse family – children and grandchildren especially – and provide the occasional escapism of living someone else's life. That all changed in 2015, with my first novel, "Tuna on Tuesdays", a writing exercise that once completed, it seemed a shame to merely consign its colourful characters to languish in a dusty drawer - or giddily spin as digits on some backup hard drive. So, the work was released to the world as an Amazon Kindle book and later a paperback.
Then followed a more ambitious novel, "Darkness of Voices” and the following year, "Dandelion Days", a collection of short stories, flash fiction and a little poetry; some new but mostly culled from pieces I had written across the years.
August 2018 saw the novel "The Spider Man" and subsequently the collections "The Schooling Chair" and "Colours in Darkness", two novellas, "Emilia's Sorrow" and "From A Dark Cell", followed by another full length novel, "With Only the Waves As Witness" and in 2024 another novella "From A Dark Past”. Another year and “From A Dark Heart” completed a trilogy featuring the avaricious Anna, and another collection of short and very short stories, “Hints of Darkness”. And there might well be more to come.
At heart I am just a family man who enjoys the hobby of writing hopefully entertaining reads. Onde who relishes the whole creative process of delving into storylines, manipulating all the twists and turns and then, for the books, laying them out, designing the covers and producing the digital artwork ready for print. The fact that a few folk like to read them, is a bonus. As are the few international online lit mags and competitions that have chosen to publish some of my shorter pieces, including The Cabinet of Heed, Reflex Press, The Molotov Cocktail, Ad Hoc Fiction, and Paragraph Planet.
